A Guide to Holiday Markets in NYC

Featured

The holiday season is one of the BEST times to live in or visit NYC! Many parks around New York create holiday markets, fairs, and shops with hundreds of vendors from local shops, restaurants, boutiques, and cafes. From ice skating to eating and shopping, the options are endless at these fun festivals around the city.

The Union Square Holiday Market is located on the south side of the park, and it is the perfect place to search for unique holiday gifts while enjoying a variety of amazing food and drinks. This market also features live music, a “Warming Station” to make the cold weather more bearable, and a Kids Art Studio. We recommend stopping by NY State of Mind for trendy NYC themed apparel and accessories, Black Lamb BK for adorable shadowboxes & greeting cards, and Shaya NYC for beautiful handmade jewelry.

Another favorite is the Winter Village and Holiday Shops at Bryant Park. This holiday festival is well-known for its ice skating rink (which is free if you bring your own skates!) and a beautiful Christmas tree, which is lit on December 4. This park is also home to over 150 booths with amazing food, handmade artwork and jewelry, and even an outdoor beer garden. Min & Mon sells funky, textured and colorful handbags and keychains that everyone should check out. The “Good Vibes Station” is another essential for both New Yorkers and tourists, selling silk screened and painted prints from the artists of from EWBA (Everything Will be Amazing).

For those who can’t stand being outside in the cold, the Grand Central Holiday Fair is perfect! Enjoy forty amazing booths with handmade and unique goods within Grand Central’s Vanderbilt Hall. Kent Stetson Handbags is a must see- his incredible clutches and bags feature interesting and unusual images of food, animals and other objects. Tuff Kookooshka sells adorable cold weather gear such as jackets and hats for children, while Case Island Glass exhibits incredible, colorful glassware.

The Columbus Circle Holiday Market is also great due to its proximity to Central Park, as well as many other holiday attractions in the city. Be sure to stop by Jet Set Candy for New York themed jewelry and charms, the famous Strand Book Store for books and stationery. Texturables by Claudia Rosillo sells beautiful handwoven blankets and textiles made by Claudia in Uruguay. They are simple and comfortable, and would make an amazing holiday gift!

DIY: Bullet Journaling

We have been seeing photos of Instagrammers, bloggers, and other influencers hyper-organized, beautifully composed bullet journals. But what are they, how do you start them, and why?! Designer Ryder Carroll created the bullet journal, and defines it as “an analog system to help you track the past, organize the present, and plan for the future”. They have gained popularity due to the customization and freedom to organize your journal however you want, and the options are really endless!

Step 1: Start with a great journal, such as this one, which is most popular among bullet journalists due to its numbered pages and 3 separate ribbon page markers. It comes in over 20 colors! When choosing a journal, be sure to get one with dotted pages rather than blank or lined. This type of journal is the most customizable, and you can still make your own lines by connecting the dots if you want to.

Step 2: Create an index and a few logs to get started. Most journalists write a future log of important dates to remember throughout the year, as well as monthly and daily logs.

Keeping it nice and simple with my set up for August. I usually do a calendar layout but wanted to switch back to the original bullet journal monthly setup for a change!

Step 3: Make a key or legend for yourself, to shorthand words and streamline your calendar. Most journalists write out the period of time that they plan to use a book for, usually 3, 6 or 12 months per book. This creates a goal and gives you a calendar to stick to.

Step 4: Daily logs. This is where we write what we need or want to achieve in a day, and also write down anything significant that happened that day.

Step 5: Lists! This is totally optional and can include whatever makes sense for YOUR life. This can be grocery/meal prep lists, books to read, things you love, restaurants to try, etc.

Step 6: If you love drawing, color, or calligraphy, feel free to use this to embellish your journal! This is not necessary, but the aesthetic of a beautifully created journal is just as appealing as the actual organization to some bullet journalists.

Step 7: Enjoy your journal! It’s amazing to mindfully organize your life and create your own personalized method of doing so. It’s also great to be able to look back at an old journal and remember all of the memories that you wrote down!

Why we should all try it:

Writing by hand does take more time than using a digital calendar on your phone or laptop, but using a handwritten analog system is much more engaging to our brains. Rather than saying “Hey Siri…schedule _____ and make a note of _____”, bullet journaling forces us to decide what is worth taking the time to write down in our pretty little notebooks. This helps us to narrow down the most important things in life!

UPDATE: The Latest in Kitchen Trends

This year, we’ve seen dinnerware and kitchen accessories start to transition from sleek and modern to more organic and fun. We’re talking abstract and splatted paint, uneven and natural line work, and exciting colors, and veering away from “matchy-matchy” plate sets. Another eco-friendly trend that we’ve seen is the use of more organic and sustainable materials such as bamboo, marble, and wood which will last longer and survive the daily wear-and-tear of kitchen use.

Here’s some inspiration for your kitchen update😉
