New Art from the Next Generation

At Design Works International, we believe that ultimately it all begins with the artist and their talents. Computers are simply the next generation of tools which extend the brush and paint or pencil and paper.

With the focus of our society on technology and social media, it’s nice to see the younger generation still involving themselves in the creation of art using traditional media. NYC is home to some amazing places to see and experience art and here are some great stories about a few up-and-comers who inspire us.

We hope that more kids will show us their wonderful creations and maybe they will be the next generation of designers here at Design Works International.

Some lucky New York City public school students are getting the chance to see their works of art among the lights of Times Square. 23 student artworks are going up on two giant digital billboards between 43rd and 44th streets. A three-minute video will play hourly. It runs through Oct. 23.

Throwback Thursday – Colonial Williamsburg

First2Print teamed up with The Colonial Williamsburg Foundation to recreate a special time period dress. Inspired by an antique swatch of silk shantung and a historic design, the costume replication was created digitally by Design Works International artists who scanned and cleaned up the image in Photoshop, for preparation for digital fabric printing.

Heimtex Happenings…Diversity among print..pattern & product!

I have been attending Hemtex (Heimtexil) the largest international textile show in Frankfurt Germany for the past 20 years. Each year the show seems to get smaller in comparison to the last both in exhibitors as well as attendees.

Most people would assume less exhibitors as well as less attendees would be a negative thing, but its actually the opposite because the people who are attending are serious buyers looking for newness in an industry that has become very homogenous over the years….but not this year!

Posting some Heimtex images for those who did not attend to get an overview of what I did see over the 4 days at the show…

Feeling the blues at Zara Home at the Zeil shopping area in Frankfurt. These patterns are from there newest home collections just in stores this week!  Organic wallpaper patterns from Casamance, Nobility, Casamance and Verbatex.

Daffodil yellow at Soffee, Jab, Pichler and Casamance.

Pantone’s Rose Quartz [13-1520] trending paired with gray and taupe.

Marbelized patched wallpaper from Brewster Home Fashions.

Graphic black and white jacquards from the trend hall at Heimtex.

Fun tween bedding at Muller Textiles.

Updated conversational prints and patterns at Esta Home NL
Jacquards from Imatex from Milan Italy

Border detailing on towels at Zara Home in the Zeil.

Purple Power in Products at Heimtex from Pichler, Brewster Home Fashions, Trend Hall fabrics and sofa fabric by Floksar Textiles.

I enjoyed seeing the diversity in print, pattern and product this year at Heimtex and look forward to seeing the textile industry move forward in a more innovative way experimenting in both design as well as in the construction of fabric!
