Trending: Pattern Mixing

Featured

We’ve been seeing bold and colorful pattern combining everywhere, and it can be a bit daunting to get so adventurous with your outfits. But this trend is so fun and achievable within any wardrobe, here are some of our favorite outfits for inspiration!

Pairing larger stripes or polka dots with dainty florals is an easy way to start pattern combining– neither print is too crazy or unusual but they pair together for a super unique outfit!

Don't be afraid to play with prints. #prints #maxiskirts #ladiesonlyboutique

Sticking to a monochromatic color palette is another easy way to wear your patterns! Playing with different scales of pattern is also helpful in creating an outfit that stands out.

From: Girlsofffifth--love the pattern clashing, especially on the lady on the right (bonus points for leopard print shoes!).

Once you’re a pro at pattern mixing, give some of these outfits a try! The bolder & funkier, the better.😎

Kinetic Store Design | The new trend in VM

Lets put it in motion! As retail spaces are getting smaller, designers have to be more and more creative about what to do with all of the store’s product. The new design trend is building up, kinetically. Stores are bringing their displays to life while maximizing space in a small square footage. Conveyor belts and moving clothing rails are automated and add an entertainment factor. Going beyond that, displays can also hold stock in the ceiling area to free up premium floor space below.

Here are a few examples of the coolest kinetic stores right now

MCM’s latest concept store in Seoul has a conveyor belt, touch screen installations, and robotic displays.

MCM

Aether store in San Fran stacked 3 shipping containers on top of each other and created a conveyor system to carry stock between all 3 floors.

Dolce & Gabanna used kinetic design in creating a ceiling that can descend to create a special VIP room within the space.

Our favorite! Check out this moving display on our Insta @designworksinternational from Descente Blanc in Tokyo. They created a unique stock display system that can be lowered depending on what the shopper is looking for. This same practice can also be found in their larger Fukuoka Store, creating a striking visual impact.

What you will learn:Β 3 Fall 2017 trends you should know about!

How long it will take you to read this post:Β 1 minute & 37 secondsΒ

Why you should read it:Β So you can be in the know… duhΒ

3…2…1….GO!

Good morning. As Hurricane Irma is subsiding into a tropical storm and the people of Houston are beginning to recover from Harvey, we can all take a deep breath and continue in our efforts to help the people affected. With the US being hit by two record breaking hurricanes within a two week span, it is hard to talk about color, print, pattern, trend, and everything else we do everyday in the studio. Hopefully these bright, beautiful trends will make us all feel a little bit better as we let ourselves get wrapped up in something pretty, at least for a minute. That “something pretty” today will be yellow ochre!Β

Now that September is fully upon us and New York Fashion will week soon behind us, we can look towards the 2017 Fall trends with ease. Let us take the guess work out of what you will be seeing:

Stripes & Plaids

We are seeing stripes and plaids more and more on the streets & on the runway this fall.

Check out this take on vertical stripes from the Dior Fall 2017Β collection along with a few others…

Hello Clueless! From the 90’s grunge inspiredΒ plaid blazers of NYFWΒ to the Italian runway of Ferretti, we are seeing it more and more. Do you have any vintage left that you can pull out the the depths of your closet?

Mohair Yarn & DIYΒ

Tactile, chunky, fuzzy, oh my!Β  We know people love their DIY and we keep seeing mohair yarn used to make beautiful pieces. We have never tried knitting but this makes us want to test it out! Would you?

Also, we saw this mohair-blend coat by Michael Kors and our heart skipped a beat.

Turmeric

So, food.Β When thinking of yellow foods, we want to shine a light on something different than bananas and lemons. Turmeric is popping up more and more as an ingredient and these turmeric date ballsΒ are anti-inflammatory, lower your risk of heart disease, help treat depression, and help to improve your brain function. Honestly, what is not to love about them?! Plus, they are beautiful, tasty, and easy to make.

Millennial Pink Overload…What will be next?

header lavender.jpg

What you will learn: How Lavender is taking over Millennial Pink in 2018

How long it will take you to read this post:Β 2 minutes & 46 Seconds

Why you should read it: You will be fully informed in how Lavender is popping up in fashion, food, & beauty.Β

3,2,1….GO!!!

Millennial pink this, millennial pink that…blah blah blah, we get it. Everyone loves the color – and what is not to love? It looks good on everyone, it’s easy on the eyes, and it can transfer between fashion, textiles, and hard goods seamlessly. But by this point, we’ve been experiencing a bit of Millennial Pink overload and we’re search for something new to cleanse our palettes…

Well, DRUM ROLL PLEASE! The new new, whimsical, serene, and youthful color happens to be… Lavender! …or as some are calling it, β€œmelodramatic purple” or β€œFrosted Lilac.” We are already seeing this color pop up in fashion, food, and beauty. So without further adieu, lets get started!

FASHION

We already see Lavender creeping in throughout the market place. Our girl J.Lo kicked off the lavender love with her Ralph & Russo gown in February at the Grammys. Just this past week, we saw Versace, Prada, Stella McCartney, Cavalli, Chanel, & Ferretti all showing off their lavender obsession forΒ Resort 2018:

Screen Shot 2017-08-29 at 3.42.57 PM.png

On a more affordable level, New Balance’s lavender sneakers ,Β Urban Outfitters oversized thermal sweater,Β and Anthropologie’s adorable elephant backpack for Fall 2017 are making their way to mass consumers.

Screen Shot 2017-08-29 at 3.10.52 PM.png

It’s also starting to pop up in the celebrity world, ie. Lorde’s dress at the VMA’s:

Screen Shot 2017-08-29 at 3.13.13 PM.png

FOOD

Just this weekend we explored the Lower East Side of Manhattan and ate a beautiful brunch at Pietro Nolita. We treated ourselves to a cocktail and chose the one with the β€œhouse infused lavender vodka,” and boy was it good! Even though it is a pink restaurant, you can see the lavender influence peaking through.

Screen Shot 2017-08-29 at 3.27.27 PM.pngAlso, why are we not talking about lavender infused ice cream more? This flavor is big in Europe and has started becoming more popular in the US in recent years. If you are in the city, il laborotorio del gelato has some of the best lavender honey ice cream we have ever had!

Vanilla Lavender Limeade. Sounds good right? This recipe has over 500 pins on Pinterest and looks delicious!

BEAUTY

We have seen the metallic grey hair sweep across beauty gurus blogs, but now people are talking β€œfrosted lavender” for their locks. When combining multiple tones of lavender, the diffusion of color adds dimension and luminous streaks to the hair.Β

Screen Shot 2017-08-29 at 3.35.47 PM.png

Homemade lavender honey lip balm has over 2,300 re-pins and looks amazing! Incorporating lavender has never been easier with help of lavender essential oils.

As far as the colors energy goes,Β Colorstrology by Pantone’s “color of the day” says, β€œwearing, meditating, or surrounding yourself with Pastel Lavender helps you embrace love. It centers you and allows you to move through your feelings with trust and ease.” Maybe thisΒ is what our world is needing a little bitΒ more of right now?

Lavender seems like the natural progression from Millennial Pink and we are excited to see it more readily in the marketplace. We at DW want to keep you on top of #trends and bring awareness to curated, creative, and cool people (just like you, dear reader!) Thanks for checking this out. First2Print and the Social Imprint Project.

We are proud to share an update from our sister company, First2print, about and exciting project that they participated in with Christian Siriano. Originally posted here.

The Social Imprint project used viewer tweets to inform an algorithm, which produced a graphic print design, which was digitally printed on silk charmeuse at our NY Studio, and finally was shipped to Christian Siriano who created two garments from it. This project meshed together technology, real-time social response to pop culture and fashion, and was worth the late nights preparing for a seamless production that ran parallel to Fashion Rocks at the Barclay Center. The final garments were walked down a runway at the Gilded Lilly in NYC, which representatives from First2Print were invited to attend.
