Creative Collabrations-New York City

Dividing my time as an exhibitor at Surtex NYC, a trend-forward design surface pattern show with my NYC based studio, Design Works International, attending the ICFF, International Contemporary Furniture Fair, where I was part of the IFDA’s “Take A Seat” campaign which is an on going project promoting talent within the design community while giving back to local charities, (on May 27th we will auction off our one of a kind up-cycled chairs with more details on the IFDA website) and visiting the National Stationary show to view the latest and greatest in graphic design and new printing techniques…..it was a week of “Creative Collabrations”!

All three exhibitions were located at the Javitz Center at 655 West 34th Street.

Surtex, in its 29th year is a business to business marketplace dedicated to selling and licensing original art and design. The show features an unparalleled and up-to-the-minute range of color, design and pattern trends for every product category imaginable!

The ICFF, in its 27th year is North America’s platform for global design and lures those in pursuit of design’s timely truths and latest trends in home design featuring contemporary furniture, seating, carpet and flooring, lighting, outdoor furniture, materials, wall coverings, accessories, textiles and kitchen and bath for both residential and commercial interiors.

The National Stationary Show in its 69th year is the worlds most comprehensive marketplace for greeting cards, stationary and related lifestyle products. Showcasing products such as cards, custom invitations, gift wrap/ribbon, stationary, speciality party products, paper tableware, bridal accessories, in-store printing equipment and much more, the stationary show is the go to source for all innovative trends regarding the newest in paper based products.

“Everything is Design. Everything.”

Paul Rand

Paul Rand

“Everything is design. Everything.” – Paul Rand

It’s a great quote and it is something we at Design Works believe in and think about on a daily basis. Paul Rand was an American art director and graphic designer. He is best known for his corporate logo designs, which include IBM, UPS, ABC and Steve Job’s NeXT, to name a few. His posters and book covers are some of the most recognizable graphic design in the world and we see them every day. He was one of the first American designers to embrace and practice the Swiss style of graphic design. The Swiss style or International Typographic Style emphasizes cleanliness, objectivity and readability. Always a very important approach to design. It’s more difficult to think minimally than over fill the space to distract the viewers eye.

The Museum of the City of New York is hosting an exhibition of Paul Rand works; “Everything is Design: The Work of Paul Rand” through July 19th. The exhibit features more than 150 advertisements, posters, corporate brochures by Mr. Rand. Click here for more information.

Paul Rand is a great influence as he was tasked with similar issues that we deal with on a daily basis. He was a problem solver, but was able to create beautiful designs without unnecessary busyness. Here are a few examples of his work. We’ve also added a few pieces to our Pinterest board .

Happy Doodle Day!

Earlier in the week, we kicked of Design Works International Doodle Month because of today!

DOODLE |ˈdo͞odl|

verb [ no obj. ]; scribble absentmindedly: he was only doodling in the margin.

noun; a rough drawing made absentmindedly.

DERIVATIVES

doodler |-d(ə)lər| noun

ORIGIN early 17th cent. (originally as a noun denoting a fool, later as a verb in the sense ‘make a fool of, cheat’): from Low German dudeltopf, dudeldopp ‘simpleton.’ Current senses date from the 1930s.

Though the formal definition of doodle and doodles are lighthearted and fun, sometimes those absentminded scribbles end up as art. Next time you’re on the phone or in front of the television and you find you’ve left your mark on the take out menu or napkin… hold onto it, you never know what it might lead to.

At Design Works we think that doodles can lead to great things. These examples are some odds & ends by our staff of original print artists which end up being gorgeous original prints. We invite you to contact us to see our extensive line of original artwork from artists all over the world, maybe you’ll even recognize a few of these doodles!
