Embrace the Rainbow

Featured

June is Pride Month and this year we’re seeing big brands embrace the rainbow more openly than ever before. Multicolored logos, unique hashtags, and brand collaborations are popping up with limited-edition looks and collections of brightly colored wares to support the LGBTQ+ community. Designers and independent retailers have openly worn this issue on their sleeves in the past but larger corporations are now starting to throw their weight behind the cause with special campaigns and initiatives with, well, pride.

The Pride Shake at Shake Shack

Shake Shack is pledging $25,000 to The Trevor Project, the world’s largest suicide prevention and crisis intervention organization for LGBTQ young people. All proceeds from their retail collection will be contributed to this donation.

Check out a few of the brands we’ve highlighted in this post, not just for their great Pride products but for their commitments to supporting equality and inclusivity, and know that you can trust your purchase will put its money where its mouth is.

Macy’s Pride + Joy

Macy’s is helping to raise awareness and critical funds to support The Trevor Project’s efforts to end suicide among lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer and questioning (LGBTQ) youth.

Madewell x Human Rights Campaign ‘Love to All’ Pride Tee

Madewell is proud to donate 50 percent of the purchase price of this rainbow tee to the Human Rights Campaign, America’s largest civil rights organization working to ensure LGBTQ people are safe, equal and free in every community.
Pride Unicorn Pool Float by SunSquad at Target

Target partners with organizations that support the LGBTQ+ community, including financial contributions and team member volunteerism, throughout the year. And in celebration of Pride month, Target will contribute $100,000 to support GLSEN.

Trend Spotting at ICFF: Fresh Ideas

Featured

Last week our trend scouting team attended the International Contemporary Furniture Fair (or ICFF, since that is quite a mouthful) here in the city and we spotted some great color, beautiful materials, and unique ideas for everything from furniture and lighting to outdoor sets and floor coverings. We’ll be highlighting some of our favorite trends this week in a series of posts and we want to kick off with a recap of our favorite fresh ideas.

ICFF Trends.003.jpeg Rounded ends, overstuffed shapes, and soft curves are making their mark on everything from sofas and ottomans to bookshelves and mirrors. Unexpected and organically shaped, these pieces make a sculptural statement while also looking oh-so-comfy.

ICFF Trends.004.jpeg

Reminiscent of building blocks or totems, stacked effects are showing up on furniture and accessories. We love this technique for an opportunity to add dimension or showcase mixed materials.

ICFF Trends.002.jpegA new company we met for the first time is Coquo, who specializes in freestanding, modular kitchen pieces that can accommodate appliances and be unified by whatever countertop you please. Check out the incredible space they created in a New York apartment below. We’ll take one in each finish, please!

ICFF Trends.001.jpegOne last favorite for now, since summertime is upon us, is this great freestanding outdoor kitchen unit in a concrete-look finish. That planter on the end (and those baguettes) had us dreaming of fresh ingredients, icy drinks, and a summer cookout.

Stay tuned for our post on color later this week.

#Healthism

healthism-.jpg

I’ll have an organic avocado toast, lightly toasted, with a side of cage-free Norwegian hemp milk please. Ok, we all know this person. Hey, we might even be this person! No judgement coming from us at the studio. We want people to be the the happiest & healthiest versions of themselves- That’s why we are talking about the new trend of #healthism.

The rise of “anti-wellness” is embracing peoples imperfections in a kinder and more realistic sense. Heard of the yoga class where baby goats jump on you? What about the one where you sip on the latest local brew while finding you inner peace? These are the types of fun “workouts” that we see appearing more and more looking forward.

Lets take a look at some of our favorite #healthism trends!

Brands like Free People are creating curated travel trips to have fun and be well!

SLIME is not just for kids!

Accounts like @slimesherbet are creating satisfying videos to make it easy for people to enjoy the #slimelife and stay less stressed out!

Mermaid Toast

Look at this stuff… isn’t it neat? Ever thought of adding spirulina or chlorphyll to your cream cheese toast? Follow @vibrantandpure for more amazing healthy food options that are delicious!

Plank for Pizza

So lets all plank for pizza and join the #healthism movement!

People want to embrace their individuality, not look like a barbie. People want sociable incentives, meaning lets workout and have a social life. People want to have fun by dancing, drinking, squishing slime, and losing the “perfection” mindset.

You want a FREE & Insta-worthy experience in NYC this weekend?

CreateGood_FullTagline_datelocation-03.png

Wait, what? It’s free?! Good afternoon, from Design Works International!

We sure had a good (actually GREAT!) afternoon exploring the Brit + Co pop-up-shop in SOHO today. Want to make pom-pom earrings? Play arcade games and eat cupcakes? How about pet with a giant sequin wall or have some Italian gelato? All of this is FREE (yes, free) this weekend.

Now, you might ask, Design Works, why is all this amazing stuff free? Well, Brit + Co wants women to feel empowered and be able to express their best self. Everything lends itself to a digital, social and experiential conversation about the GOOD that women can achieve in all areas of their life, from good food to good style to good work and good minds, and everything good in between. We think this is pretty cool!

So #CreateGood, and go check it out this weekend! Here are some of our fav things from today’s opening.

Play with some sequins! Don’t forget to make the pom-pom earrings you see on the right.

A “Yum” of ping pong balls & a little reminder 🙂

Have some fun and #CreateGood!

Kinetic Store Design | The new trend in VM

Lets put it in motion! As retail spaces are getting smaller, designers have to be more and more creative about what to do with all of the store’s product. The new design trend is building up, kinetically. Stores are bringing their displays to life while maximizing space in a small square footage. Conveyor belts and moving clothing rails are automated and add an entertainment factor. Going beyond that, displays can also hold stock in the ceiling area to free up premium floor space below.

Here are a few examples of the coolest kinetic stores right now

MCM’s latest concept store in Seoul has a conveyor belt, touch screen installations, and robotic displays.

MCM

Aether store in San Fran stacked 3 shipping containers on top of each other and created a conveyor system to carry stock between all 3 floors.

Dolce & Gabanna used kinetic design in creating a ceiling that can descend to create a special VIP room within the space.

Our favorite! Check out this moving display on our Insta @designworksinternational from Descente Blanc in Tokyo. They created a unique stock display system that can be lowered depending on what the shopper is looking for. This same practice can also be found in their larger Fukuoka Store, creating a striking visual impact.
