Design Works International is a lifestyle studio located in the heart of Manhattan that’s been helping to define and capitalize on trends for over 30 years. Originally (and still) a print studio, the in-house artists at Design Works International are busy every day exploring, inspiring, and creating to bring you original prints that are on-trend and sure to sell!

First2Print and the Social Imprint Project.

We are proud to share an update from our sister company, First2print, about and exciting project that they participated in with Christian Siriano. Originally posted here.

The Social Imprint project used viewer tweets to inform an algorithm, which produced a graphic print design, which was digitally printed on silk charmeuse at our NY Studio, and finally was shipped to Christian Siriano who created two garments from it. This project meshed together technology, real-time social response to pop culture and fashion, and was worth the late nights preparing for a seamless production that ran parallel to Fashion Rocks at the Barclay Center. The final garments were walked down a runway at the Gilded Lilly in NYC, which representatives from First2Print were invited to attend.

In the Market, On the Runway

It’s always exciting to see things that we’ve worked on out in the world. Here is a wonderful example in the fashion world. Our sister company, First2Print, printed these fabrics for Yigal Azrouël’s Ready to Wear Fall 2015 and you can currently see them on style.com.

Mr. Azrouël, who is Israeli born and is known for his feminine designs and expert draping techniques, produces 90% of his products right here in NYC’s Fashion District.

Fusion Fashion 2015 – Patterns & Substrates

I was honored to be asked by one of my fashion students from Parsons to attend the yearly Fusion Fashion Show. Each year this show is organized to spotlight top up and coming fashion designers from the two most prestigious fashion schools in the country. You can go to their site and view all of the work and find out more of the show. All work shown here is property of the designer.

I found it incredibly inspiring to see all the hard work and creativity that went into the looks each of the designer’s looks. It’s interesting to see things that we talk about at Design Works in the creative minds of those who will represent design in the future…

We love print and pattern here and it is alive and well with some wonderful examples by these new designers.

It takes a great deal of skill & creativity to use such diverse materials and substrates. The mixing of the different fabrics and textures adds great feel to each of the pieces.

And a special shout-out to Rhea Goyal from Parsons. She invited me to the show and I’m proud to say that she is one of my students. I see great things from her in class and was wowed by what she showed me here.

I’d say the future of fashion and design is in pretty good hands.

Trend Alert! Neon

Just in time for Valentine’s Day!

We’re spot on with the trends. Here is a sneak peek at some brand new pieces in our collection.

Fusion of Fashion & Home – Pale Pink

The softer side of color is refreshing and uplifting with Pale Pink trending in both fashion and home this season…

Pink is known for it’s soft qualities. The addition of white to calms down the passionate red and replaces it with a gentle, comforting feeling. Studies have confirmed that exposure to pink can have a calming effect; violent prisoners have been calmed by placing them in a pink room for specified amount of time.

If you have a friend that wears pink all the time it may indicate a need for acceptance, support and unconditional love. It puts us in touch with our nurturing side.

Pink is the color of uncomplicated emotions. It represents the child in all of us; the innocence and sweetness, the inexperience an naiveté.

Fusion of Fashion & Home – Marsala

Sephora has just added some beautiful products in Marsala for their Color of the Year program.

SEPHORA-Pantone-Universe-Marsala

At Design Works International we have long believed in the concept of Fusion of Fashion & Home as it relates to design and color. Pattern, color, aesthetic overlap into every industry. The designer that designs specifically for fashion or home is not as common as in the past. Now as all industries provide consumers with products that allow them to link all aspects of their life. Evidence is the new Sephora line and the Fusion of Fashion & Home Marsala below.

National Argyle Day

Argyle (or Argyl) truly never goes out of style. From the World War I Highlanders and Louis Armstrong, through Pierre Balman in the 50s to Vivienne Westwood’s current creations it’s amazing to see how it’s been interpreted over the years and the ways it’s been worn. How awesome are those socks in that wedding party photo by Abbey Caldwell?argyle

We have the Clan Cambell of Argyll Scotland as they used the basic pattern in their kilts and plaids. Scottish Highlanders have been wearing these patterned socks since at least the 1600s (they were generally known as “tartan hose”). After World War I, argyle knitwear became fashionable in Great Britain and then the United States.
