TBT – The Marie Antoinette Room in The Metropolitan Museum of Art

Thank goodness they liked our work, or they may have taken off our heads!!

In 2007 the Museum came to us to help them with refurbishing Marie Antoinette’s furniture. Detailed patterns were done here and full size printouts were made for every piece to be embroidered from.

Paris..products and lots of “purdy stuff” at Maison Objet!

How many years can one person attend a show and still get inspired…the answer is 20! Yep I have been coming to Maison Objet for the past 20 years and I still get excited spotting fresh and fun products. Sometimes it’s just an updated color or a new texture or technique that inspires me but you guested it…key word is INSPIRED!

So many people today say that retail is flat and that products are not interesting, but I beg to differ because products today “have to be exciting in order to survive because the competition is so vast” so let’s start looking in the right place….shows like Maison that inspire us to be “our best self” in the product world of course…

It’s true that the show is large and getting larger each year…why because this is where you come to be in inspired…sorry had to throw that in…but it’s true…that is why we schlep through millions…or it seems like millions of aisles to find those inspiring products and ideas that make us smile…

Here are a few of mine…..

The Birth of Simplicity in Product Design

braun

Currently there is an exhibition running in Paris called Systems: A Retrospective of 1960s Braun Design which highlights Braun’s design work. The company’s packaging design is the main focus of the exhibit.

It’s not difficult to see the influence that Braun has on today’s design sensibility. Dieter Rams, the designer responsible for many of the Braun designs, is cited as a major influence by Jony Ivy, Apple’s Senior Vice President of Design. When you look at the products themselves you can see why they are so beautiful even today. Apple may have perfected the art of simplicity as it relates to product design, but surely Braun & Dieter Rams are the grandfather of that trend.

The designs themselves do not look like anything out of the ordinary today, but back in the 60s they seemed almost freakish compared to the products that were already on shelves.

The exhibition is being presented by das program and will appear at Moda International through February 27th. Visit their website for more information and great imagery.
