We need more news like this | Sketches & Musings

It’s “feel good moments” like this that make me smile and regain faith in our community, especially when the person we are talking about is my husband, Neil Breslau. I was also honored that one of our very own at Design Works International, Jim Simon took it upon himself to write a blog about the Libertad Urban Farm and Neil’s involvement in helping Tanya restore the farm after a thief took off with her produce that was ready to harvest and stole all her tools and destroyed the farm during this terrible experience. We like to say out of bad comes good and this story is a perfect example of just that….enjoy the read and video. We are all proud at Design Works International and hope that you will be as well…

Sincerely,Nancy Fire Breslau

I’ve long believed the world can be a difficult place and I’ve begun to think that as a society we seem to focus on the negative rather than positive. This is a nice story about some go…

Neutral Nuance in Paris

So inspired by the colors of Paris through architecture and natural lighting. It truly is a painters paradise where organic color takes center stage.

Hashtags & How to Use Them

“Use of a word or phrase preceded by a hash or pound sign (#)to identify messages on a specific topic” is the definition of a hashtag given if you search online. The concept is simple, in fact so simple, sometimes it’s confusing. Just think about what YOU might search for when adding hashtags and simply put the “#” in front of it.

Here are a couple “broad” hashtags. #home #art #textiles. And a few “refined” hashtags. #modernlivingroom #streetart #digitalprintedtextiles. Finally, some specific hashtags. #hgtvhome #keitharing #first2print

As you can see the hashtags all fit within three basic areas, but guide the search to different things. Specific hashtags would be for companies, people, subjects, etc. that people are aware of and would have an audience already. Refined hashtags will help people who are trying to find something a bit more direct. Broad hashtags will give you the largest number of results.

This beautiful image is an excellent example as it could be tagged with many things; #tile #ethnic #brightcolor #handbpainted #inspiration #quilt #geometric, so this example would be found by lots of searchers. We could then get specific by tagging things like #designworksintl #first2print #fabricdesign #textileinspiration.

So make sure you tag your photos so the right people find them in places like Facebook, Twitter & Instagram. You can even add our “#designworksintl” hashtag to your images and we could see your images!

New Art from the Next Generation

At Design Works International, we believe that ultimately it all begins with the artist and their talents. Computers are simply the next generation of tools which extend the brush and paint or pencil and paper.

With the focus of our society on technology and social media, it’s nice to see the younger generation still involving themselves in the creation of art using traditional media. NYC is home to some amazing places to see and experience art and here are some great stories about a few up-and-comers who inspire us.

We hope that more kids will show us their wonderful creations and maybe they will be the next generation of designers here at Design Works International.

Some lucky New York City public school students are getting the chance to see their works of art among the lights of Times Square. 23 student artworks are going up on two giant digital billboards between 43rd and 44th streets. A three-minute video will play hourly. It runs through Oct. 23.
